Jamie's Spanish Chicken

After getting home on Saturday from work, I realised we had a nice long weekend with Monday off work as well and absolutely no plans. When the house is starting to look a bit untidy and messy, as Connie would say, "it's time we had visitors." So I looked through some cook book and came across a recipe for Spanish chicken in Jamie Oliver's cook book (thanks for the christmas present, Nanna!) Then on to the phone to rustle up guests, and struck lucky with lots of willing takers.

Emma was good all morning, but couldn't be left. She loves attention, and loves to play, but it has to be a new game every 15 minutes. It's great when two of us are ho
me, but for Helen alone, it means she's fully occupied.

We had seven to lunch, and the recipe only catered for four. Doubling it meant doubling a four pound chicken. Which meant two chickens! They just squeezed into the oven. I was mostly calm doing the cooking except when I was all ready to whisk the cream for Nigella's rhubarb fool to make it thick, and couldn't find the whisk attachment. 10 panicked minutes of kitchen cupboard searching later, during which time everything else needed attention, I managed to find it.

When everyone arrived at 1pm, I was just about finished and I was carving the chicken - quite unusual for me to be ready! We all sat outside and the weather was perfect - fresh but warm. The meal seemed to go down well, but you needed strong teeth for the roasted chorizo which had toughened up a bit.

Rob (Gramps) had a shiny new camera for his recent birthday. It's a Nikon D50 SLR. Yesterday he took some lovely pictures of the family, and showed how good the lens is by photographing an aeroplane that looked like a dot and took some high quality shots of flowers.

After the meal, Emma woke up and cried but was soon settled by being rocked and walked. Becky and Rob took her off for a walk around Poets Walk in the papoose and enjoyed themselves. When they got back we had a game of scrabble won by Leila who had taken a storming lead but eventually won by a slender margin of two points from myself.
